Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has been left heartbroken after his dog Rex died in his arms at the age of 13.

The ITV soap star, who played the role of hot-headed Jim McDonald on the show until 2018, said a final goodbye to his chocolate Labrador who passed away on Monday morning.

The 61 year old actor posted an emotional tweet to social media the following day in memory of his furry friend.

The Northern Irishman, who has two other dogs, wrote: “My heart is busted. Rex died in my arms yesterday morning. To all folk out there going through losing a brother, for that’s what he was, smile soon.”

The loving owner shared a sombre picture of his beloved pet in his finer years enjoying a lovely dog walk with Charlie soaking up the sun after a paddle in the stream.

The Coronation Street legend was inundated with messages from fans offering their condolences to the actor.

One user wrote: “We lost our Arthur a few months ago and feel your pain. He wasn’t just a dog he was our world and the loss of him has caused pain that we didn’t think possible.”

Another added: “I’m sorry for your loss Charlie. At least you’ve both had the life delight of loving each other.”

A third wrote: “Charlie, I’m absolutely devastated for you. We’ve got chocolate labs and they’re not pets, they’re family. Unless you’re a dog owner, you’ll not understand how you feel about them and love you unconditionally. Best wishes to you all.”

The soap star first appeared in Coronation Street in 1989 as a regular character until 2000, who has continued to make extended guest appearances on the show, with his last one being in 2018.

The Irish actor has since taken a step back from the show after he was last seen on the cobbles in 2018 when it was revealed that he had faked that his and Liz’s daughter were still alive.

It comes after Charlie reportedly broke lockdown rules after not isolating following a holiday in Spain, arguing that he had “things to do” but insists that he’s “been sensible.”

Speaking to the Mirror, Charlie explained his reason for not self-isolating for the suggested two weeks after returning to the UK.

He said: “When we’ve come back I’ve been sensible. I have things to do and dogs to walk and so there is no way I can sit in my bathroom for two weeks, it’s not going to happen.”
