Visceral fat can be extremely harmful in large quantities, and it raises a person’s chances of developing a number of conditions. Fortunately, by making a few changes to one’s diet your risk can be reduced, and belly fat loss may be possible.
A recent behavioural study highlighted the importance of using herbs and spices in your meals as opposed to salt.
The study found participants were able to decrease their salt intake by nearly 1000 milligrams a day.
This equated to approximately five bags of Doritos.
Other studies have highlighted the importance of certain spices and herbs in helping to target visceral belly fat.
According to a study conducted at the Tufts University, curcumin which is found in turmeric can actually suppress fat tissue growth.
Another way in which turmeric helps in losing weight is by regulating sugar levels and further preventing insulin resistance.
This results in excess fat that is not retained in the body.
Turmeric was also found to convert white fat into brown fat, which is burned by the body to release energy, not stored as fat.

Scientists at England’s Oxford Polytechnic Institute found that eating one teaspoon of mustard can help to boost the metabolism by up to 25 percent for several hours after eating.
Another study published in the Asian Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that visceral adipose tissue of rats fed a diet of pure lard was lowered when the diet was supplemented with mustard oil.
The belly fat loss benefits can be attributed to allyl isothiocyanates, phytochemicals that give the mustard its characteristic flavour.
Researchers at Canada’s Laval University suggest that a key chemical contained in chillies could boost the body’s ability to burn fat and curb one’s appetite all in all helping to get rid of visceral fat.
Capsaicin is the chemical that gives chillies and chilli-based spices such as cayenne and paprika their characteristic pungency and also stimulates a natural process whereby some of the food we eat at each meal is converted immediately to heat.
Known as diet-induced thermogenesis, this process helps to burn belly fat because it means a person burns up calories automatically rather than storing them.
Health experts have found that spicy chilli peppers can boost metabolism by four to five percent per day, potentially making fat burning and belly fat loss easier.
In a study published in BMC Public health, spicy food consumption and its effect on fat loss was analysed.
The study noted: “Previous studies have shown a beneficial effect of spicy food consumption on weight management in intervention studies.
“Moreover, a Korean study showed that a 12 weeks’ introduction of spicy sauce to daily diet resulted in visceral fat loss and better lipid profiles, but without weight change.”
