Logie nominations: Melissa Leong and Tom Gleeson go head-to-head for Gold

It’s been more than three years since Tom Gleeson stunned the industry by winning the Gold Logie in March 2019, but the comedian and host of the ABC’s Hard Quiz will be looking to make it back-to-back upsets when Australian TV’s biggest awards show returns on June 19 after a two-year COVID-induced absence.

Gleeson is nominated for the Gold Logie for most popular personality on Australian television and in the new category of most popular presenter. But he faces stiff competition.

MasterChef’s Melissa Leong is a first-time nominee in both categories, as is Seven’s Sonia “what-show-is-she-not-on” Kruger.

Melissa Leong is a first-time nominee for the Gold Logie.

The other nominees for the Gold Logie, which is voted for by the public, are Hamish Blake, Julia Morris, Karl Stefanovic and Home and Away veteran Ray Meagher.

The revamped awards – which for the first time in their 62-year history are not being run by TV Week but rather by an independent events company (though the magazine maintains naming rights) – will this year include a new category acknowledging the work of Australian talent overseas.

The Silver Logie for Most Popular Australian Actor Or Actress in an International Program has been introduced to “acknowledge and celebrate the huge number of Australians making their mark across the globe in international hits”, according to the organisers.

The nominees for this inaugural award include Angourie Rice (who played Kate Winslet’s daughter in Mare of Easttown), singer and YouTube star Troye Sivan (Three Months), Murray Bartlett (for his outrageous turn as the manager of a luxury hotel in The White Lotus), and perennial awards contenders Jacki Weaver (Yellowstone), Sarah Snook (Succession) and Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale).

The new award for most popular presenter will be named after Bert Newton, whose moniker is equally synonymous with presenting, the Logies, and presenting the Logies.

“We are so thrilled Bert is being recognised this way and will be part of the Logies every year moving forward,” said his widow Patti of the four-time Gold Logie winner and 20-time Logies host, who died last October. “It was such a big part of his career and he just loved it, so I know he would be pretty pleased with this honour.”

Hugo Weaving, Anna Torv and Deborah Mailman have all scored the double honour of being nominated in both the publicly voted Most Popular and the industry voted Most Outstanding categories, for their work in Love Me (Binge), The Newsreader (ABC) and Total Control (also ABC) respectively.

Love Me is one of the frontrunners, nominated for seven awards in all (four public and three industry). Will Lodder, one of its young leads, is a contender for the publicly voted Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent, but the ABC’s Tony Armstrong is likely to be a strong vote-puller too.

The Newsreader is up for six awards in total (two public, four industry) while Total Control has four nominations (two public, two industry). Stan’s The Tourist has three, all in the industry voted categories, the same number as Foxtel’s final season of Wentworth (one public, two industry).

But it is Home and Away (Seven) that leads the count in the Most Popular categories, with five nominations in all.

There are no clear favourites in the reality field, though SAS – which is in the hunt for the first time this year – may have novelty on its side as it squares off against the old stagers.

This is not a game, SAS chief instructor Ant Middleton never tires of saying. But it may come with a prize.

The ceremony will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre and broadcast live on Nine, owner of this masthead, and 9Now, on June 19. Voting for the Most Popular categories is now open at tvweeklogiesvote.com and remains open until the end of the red carpet telecast on the day of the awards.
