In a recent episode of EastEnders, Tiffany Butcher (played by Maisie Smith) gave Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) some diet pills so that she could lose weight fast and be chosen to carry Rainie (Tanya Franks) and Stuart Highway’s (Ricky Champ) baby. However, even after Bernie had the insemination procedure to get pregnant, she continued to pressure Tiffany to give her the pills. Bernie has had the heartbreak of suffering a miscarriage in the past, but could history repeat itself if she continues to take the diet pills?
In scenes set to air next week, Rainie gets tearful while watching a video of Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) and so Vi (Gwen Taylor) persuades her to go to the café as a distraction.
However, as they make their way to the cafe, they spot Bernie and comment on how poorly she is looking.
Bernie has been taking more diet pills, although Rainie, who has no clue, hands the youngster more money to show how grateful she is.
Later, Karen (Lorraine Stanley) invites everyone over for lunch when Keegan (Zack Morris) reveals he was the one who told Karen about the surrogacy.
Bernie starts to feel guilty about taking the diet pills, but will she be able to stop?
Talking about the storyline in a new interview, the actress who plays Bernie teased what is in store for her character.
She went on to add that there are worries Bernie with either have a miscarriage or get attached to the baby.
“It is always going be a worry for the Taylors and Rainie and Stuart, as well as Bernie,” the actress told the Daily Mirror.
She continued: “I think Bernie’s mind is so focused on carrying the baby and not having a miscarriage and handing the baby over, because she knows as soon as the baby is handed over, she gets that final instalment.”
“That’s all the money for her family, so she is kind of thinking along those lines but there is that worry of a young girl carrying a baby for nine months, having lost a baby, there is that side of it.”
In scenes that aired this week, Tiffany encouraged her pal to take a pregnancy test.
However, much to her shock, Rainie overheard their discussion and wanted to be there when Bernie found out.
Rainie wasn’t the only one to overhear the private conversation as Tiffany’s husband Zack also saw what was going on, although he jumped to the conclusion his wife was pregnant.
As a result, Bernie had to come clean with her brother and when he found out the truth, he told their mum Karen, who was far from happy.
“What have you done to my daughter?” Karen shouted at Rainie. “You can’t do this!”
Although, much to everyone’s shock, Bernie confirmed she was having a baby as she said: “Two lines… I’m having their baby.”
Viewers have already become worried for Bernie’s welfare, with many taking to social media to air their concerns.
One viewer penned: “Bernie already looking unwell.”
Another wrote: “Bernie should not have felt pressured to provide for her family.
“Karen would have worked things out regardless and I think Bernie taking the diet pills has made things so much worse for her and the baby too. Bernie is taking a huge risk.” (sic)
“Bernie needs to assess her situation and come off the diet pills now,” a third commented.
While a fourth said: “So Bernie has discovered the news that she’s pregnant with Rainie’s and Stuart’s baby.
“This is going to go horribly wrong now especially when we know that Bernie has agreed to take much stronger diet pills. For all we know she could have harmed the baby.”
“The diet pills are going to make you (lose) any baby you’re carrying, Bernie…,” a fifth tweeted. (sic)
