Emmerdale and Coronation Street rescheduled this week due to Euro 2020

The two ITV soaps, Emmerdale and Coronation Street were both cancelled ahead of last night’s England semi-final match.

The soaps are usually aired throughout the week but due to the major Euro 2020 event last night, ITV decided to cancel both.

This isn’t the first time the two ITV soaps have been cancelled or rescheduled. Over the past month, ITV’s usual schedule has been turned upside down due to the coverage of the UEFA Euro championships.

The two soaps have been aired at different times and on different days over the past month to make room for the football coverage.

Emmerdale would usually be aired on Wednesday at 7pm with Coronation Street starting immediately after at 7.30pm.

The second episode of Coronation Street is usually then aired later at 8.30pm but with kick-off for the game at 8pm and an end time of 10.35 pm, there was no room on the ITV schedule to fit both soaps and football.

Last nights England match against Denmark was aired on ITV with coverage starting at 6.30pm, instead of the BBC.

The BBC aired the semi-final game between Italy and Spain but the honour of the England match was forwarded to ITV for last nights coverage.

Millions of football fans tuned in to ITV tonight to watch the game with soap fans at a loss of their usual Emmerdale and Corrie fix.

However, Emmerdale will be returning tonight at its usual time slot of 7pm and 8pm.

Whereas Corrie fans will have to wait a little longer for the return of the cobbled street drama with an hour-long episode being aired on Friday.

This is due to an hour-long episode that was aired on Tuesday to make up for the rescheduled show last night.

Fans took to Twitter over the reschedule airings of their favourites soaps.

One said: "Why has the football got 1.5 hours of chatting s**t before kickoff when they could have the soaps on #Corrie. Roll on Monday when it’s all over.”

Another Tweeter said: "#Emmerdale both @ITV and @BBCOne have plenty of other channels for football without all this delayed or cancelled usual programmes."

And another said: "Really not happy that both soaps #Corrie and #Emmerdale episodes have been screwed around so much due to football.

"Why not show them on ITV2? All very well saying stream the week, but many older people not online or have weak WiFi signal.”

With another soap fan Tweeting: "Come on @ITV f**k the football get #Emmerdale on! I hate it when you f**k about like this when there's sport on. Takes the p**s.”

Coronation Street boss, Iain MacLeod also spoke out about the changes to the ITV soap due to the intense coverage of the UEFA Euro championships.

He said: "There are loads of key rivalries across the cobbles this summer.

"And I think it will be like following your favourite team – there will be times where they let you down, make mistakes and maybe score a few own goals.

"But you'll back them until the end and woe betide anyone else who criticises them.

"Given how exciting the stories are, it's great that fans will have the chance to binge-watch all the episodes on ITV Hub at the start of each week.

"As with football, sometimes when it’s an exciting face-off, you really want extra time."

For those who still need their soap fix this week's episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street are available to watch on ITV Hub.

Emmerdale will be returning tonight at 7pm and Coronation Street on Friday at 7.30pm both on ITV.
