Whether it’s character deaths or shocking returns, NCIS has provided viewers with plenty of heart in mouth moments over the years. Whilst the ongoing season 19 could yet provide more nominees for this list, we thought we would take a look at what are widely-viewed as the top five most shocking moments in the show’s history.

NCIS is an American police procedural TV series that first premiered in September 2003.

The premise of the show revolves around a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, based in Washington D.C.

Actors and actresses to have starred within it include Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette.

Over 400 episodes NCIS has delivered a host of plot twists but what are the top five most shocking the show has ever produced?

5.) The team is split up (Season 5, Episode 19)

Season five concluded with two spectacular moments that had viewers shocked at what they were seeing.

Firstly, NCIS Director Jenny Shepard (played by Lauren Holly) was killed in a shootout which then left the team having to figure out what happened under her successor Leon Vance (played by Rocky Carroll).

Leroy ‘Jethro’ Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) concluded that it was a former assassin that Jenny had tried to kill nine years previously.

After Gibbs gained revenge and killed the assassin, Vance responded by breaking up the team to end the season.

4.) DiNozzo meets his daughter (S 13, EP 24)

Arguably the most emotional scene in the entire history of NCIS is when Tony DiNozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) meets his daughter, Tali, for the very first time.

Up until this point, DiNozzo had no idea he even had a child.

After making the discovery, he then decides to leave NCIS and become a devoted father to his newly found daughter.

3.) Abby is shot and decides to leave (S 15, EP 21-22)

In series 15 Abby (played by Pauley Perrette) and Reeves (played by Duane Henry) solve a case which involves helping a homeless veteran.

As the pair leave the scene, they’re approached by a mugger with a gun, whom Reeves then gives some money to. However, when Abby offers to do the same the mugger pulls the trigger and shoots both Reeves and Abby.

Reeves is killed but Abby wakes up in a hospital. Eventually it’s revealed that the mugger was hired to kill her by a criminal she had arrested years earlier.

Upon learning of Reeves’ death, Abby decides to leave NCIS and move to London to set-up a charity that Reeves had always wanted to open.

2.) Ziva’s found to be alive (S 16, EP 24)

Ziva (played by Cote de Pablo) was thought to have been killed earlier in the show, although her body was never found.

When season 16 arrived, NCIS began to drop hints that she might still be alive. These clues would eventually prove to be true as she suddenly appeared in Gibbs’ basement during episode 24.

The plot twist was a huge surprise for fans of the series who were more than happy to welcome her back onto their screens.

1.) Caitlin Todd dies (S 2, EP 23)

Top of the list of most shocking moments is when Caitlin Todd (played by Sasha Alexander) was killed in Season two.

It was the first scene where one of NCIS’ main cast members was killed and also provided the most jaw-dropping moment of the show to date.

Caitlin’s death was particularly distressing for viewers as she was shot through the forehead, which meant the show’s writers wouldn’t be able to miraculously bring her back in the following season.
